The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations came into force on 2 January 2007 and applies the principle of Producer Responsibility to this sector under the European WEEE Directive. Any business of any size that manufacturers, imports or sells under their own brand, equipment that relies on electrical current to work is now considered a 'Producer' and must legally register with a Compliance Scheme by 15 March 2007.

Transform has been approved as such a scheme. Operated by Biffa Waste Services - one of the UK's largest waste management companies - and with 10 years experience in providing successful cost effective compliance under the similar Packaging Waste Regulations, Transform has the pedigree and operational capability to meet producer expectations for reliable, well informed, cost-controlled compliance.

Update - 2 May

The EA have delayed the final obligation calculation for 2007 by two weeks. This should have happened on 1 May, but a significant disparity between the data submitted by schemes and the evidence placed on the Settlement Centre by AATFs means that there would have been more evidence than obligation. This would undermine the whole basis on which the Regulations have been predicated and BERR and the Agencies have therefore decided to apply a delay and request schemes to ensure the two data sets match. This means that the compliance deadline is also delayed and will now be mid-June.

However, despite these delays on finalising the 2007 position, 2008 data is still required by all the regulatory deadlines. The next deadline for data required by Transform from its members will be 25th July. The Environment Agency has indicated it will be taking a much firmer line on late submissions and free riders this year.
